Toby, you heartbreak.. Last year I was in palawan a gloriously cloud soaked island in the Philippines, talking to the indigenous people about the mining that threatens their forests.. they are custodians of some o the last stands of great forest left in Asia and thus serve the world though carbon sequestration. It is to be flattened to mine nickel for batteries so that urbanistas can drive hybrid cars, amondst other things. This Man (bloke) in the Biosphere reserve with its ancient custodian is to pay the price of modernity..
Love what you are doing,, will send on to SEJ.. my rather strange association.
Love
Melody in jakarta

I've long dreamed of sitting in on a meal with Jody Berland and Toby Miller at the same table--thank you for sharing this amusing and smart conversation. The juicey bits about publishers were perhaps most telling, only because I'm more familiar with Jody's public transcript of her work. I do hope there's a follow up podcast (as suggested) not only about Jody's work on cats, but also how you two view the present and future of environmental concerns in cultural studies in relation not only to your own work as individuals but each other's. I'd love to hear that conversation between the two of you.

I think this is very helpful for giving a sense of how the field of cultural studies involves people who come to it and work through it in different ways. Often it is presented in some kind of summary or "unified" form and the actual uneven and irregular history of the field is overlooked. Doug Kellner has an unusually diverse and rich history, and it gives a better sense of what cultural studies can be by looking at where people came from and what they experienced along the way in contributing to it.
